The concept of “wearable art” or “artwear” usually refers to hand-made pieces, which involve aesthetic considerations and relate either to clothing or jewelry. The term wearable art implies that the work is to be accepted as a serious and unique artistic statement,  which can be both worn or displayed.
Artists such as Botticelli, Le Brun, de la Tour and Delacroix were captivated by the design and composition of the garments and made a point of translating it into their painting only to emphasize that costumes are not only a result but also a cause for artistic inspirations.
The evolution of the relationship between art and clothing is enhanced by the development they have both ventured;  however, the modern idea of wearable art seems to have surfaced in various forms, spanning roughly through the 1930s to the 1960s, when hand-made textiles became the focus of the art to wear movement.

From then on, artists have tended to mock fashion to some degree nonetheless, they do exert a great influence and have inspired the movement to a great extent. It is a challenge that emerging talents like Ana Sammartino take on with great passion and conviction for they see their art form as an integral part of a process of transformation as well as a refence to art itself.

Nowadays,  that wearable textile art has most certainly emancipated from the concept conveyed through painting, Ana Sammartino presents her unique woven pieces as works that express the intertwining of fiber as the fundamental principle behind the organizational system of human existence.
By crosslinking textures and colors from different fibers and fabrics, the artist uses the power of a metaphor as a linguistic resource to convey the importance of human culture and its language, representing notions such as death, fear or happiness, emotions which constitute the ultimate aspirations of art.
